What crawl space insulation does
Crawl space insulation is the thermal layer: it slows heat moving through floors in winter and helps the HVAC keep up. Encapsulation is the moisture layer. In a still-vented crawl space, humid air condenses in the batts, they gain water weight, and they fall. We see that after summer storms in Wake and Johnston County constantly. RNL installs insulation as part of a dry-space system — typically on the walls of an encapsulated crawl, or as a specified product like rigid foam or Bora-Board. If the ground is wet, we drain and encapsulate first so the new insulation has a dry place to live.
The Problem
Original fiberglass between the floor joists soaks up humidity in a vented crawl. Once batts get wet they lose R-value, hold odor, and can feed mold on the paper facing. Homeowners feel it as icy floors in January and a furnace that never seems to catch up. The lasting fix is a dry, sealed space, then the right insulation in the right place.
What we install
- Inspection of existing batts — remove wet, fallen, or compressed material before new product goes in
- Rigid foam board on foundation walls in encapsulated crawls, where it stays out of the dirt and keeps a consistent R-value
- Bora-Board and similar mineral-wool / mineral-board options where the spec calls for a non-paper-faced product
- Fiberglass when the space is already dry and the location (joist bay vs wall) makes sense — we will tell you on the inspection
- Air sealing at rim joists and penetrations so the insulation can do its job
- Coordination with encapsulation and a dehumidifier so new insulation goes into a dry crawl

Insulation FAQs
In an encapsulated crawl we usually insulate the foundation walls and treat the crawl as conditioned or semi-conditioned space. Joist-bay batts above a still-vented dirt floor are what fail here. We confirm the right location on inspection.
When the space is dry, vents are sealed, and the batts still have their shape. Soaked or fallen batts come out. If the crawl is still wet, we use wall foam or Bora-Board after drainage and encapsulation.
If the crawl is damp, encapsulate first so the insulation stays dry. See encapsulation. If water pools, start with drainage.
Both are wall products used in sealed crawls. Rigid foam is a closed-cell board. Bora-Board is a mineral-based board option we install when the job spec or pest/moisture conditions call for it. We show both on-site.
Warm floors need a sealed crawl and a thermal layer. We quote both when that is what the house needs.
It depends on square footage of wall or joist area, product (foam vs board vs batt), and whether wet material has to be removed first. Insulation-only jobs are priced separately from encapsulation. Written quote after inspection.
